At school, some kids formed a religious cult they called Agus. They said that they believed that beyond the First Age of Men, the Second Age of Steam, and the current Digital Age, there were two other ages, the Age of Divinity, and the the Age of Magic. They believed in four gods, Opifex, Ultor, Regem Angelorum, and Dator, everyone dismissed them as crazy, but, like all other religions, they "knew" their way was right. My best friend, Jeremy Simmers, was part of the original six that started the cult, and besides my dad, he was the only person I trusted with my secret.
Although I knew that he would probably make fun of me and call me insane, I told him about my powers anyways, mind you this was only my third day knowing that I had them. But Jeremy didn't laugh, and he didn't call me crazy, here were his exact words:
"Dator, the god of Giving, has blessed you with these supernatural powers. He predestined you to usher in an age of power for the humans, one that will allow us to rise above our Cyber overlords, who have not come yet, but will come soon. During the Hex age, you will help the humans overpower their Weston Robotics overlords and will begin the age of transcension."
I had to confirm what he said in the last sentence. "Weston Robotics?" I asked him. He confirmed his statement... I had to go see my father.
We, meaning me and my dad, had agreed on a meeting place, 3 kilometers outside of city limits. I told my mom that I was headed out for a little while and that I'd be back for dinner. My bike was leaned against the side of my house, just by the door, I grabbed it and started riding westward.
The few times I had been out side of the city were with school on long field trips where I usually slept, so the landscape was somewhat surprising. The city was surrounded by large, grassy hills, ones that should have been mowed by the city, but instead were left untamed. All the roads leading out of the city were toll roads, probably a move by the mayor to discourage people from leaving. I didn't have any money so, instead, I just rode a little way away from the road and carried my bike through the tall, unkempt grass and weeds.
It took me about 20 minutes to get to the prearranged meeting place where my father was already waiting.
"So you made it?" my father sounded somewhat surprised and somewhat relieved, like he thought I wouldn't have made it.
"You think I wouldn't've?" I asked him, halfway sarcastic, half rhetorical.
"Yes, but that's beside the point, why did you need to see me?"
"This is going to sound insane, but I talked to an Agus, he kind of went all prophecy mode and told me that my powers would help overtake the 'Weston Robotics' overlords, any thoughts?"
"Oh, well, your Agus friend was probably right. What was his name?"
"Jeremy, Jeremy Simmers."
"Oh no... Jeremy, along with five others, was a test subject for cybernetic implants at Weston. They all have robotic eyes and ears, Weston heard and saw everything you said and did. Did Jeremy touch you at all?"
"He patted my arm before I left."
"Get down." My dad looped his arm around my neck and pulled me down. Quickly, he rolled upwards and I felt the air temperature drop a little. An explosion sounded overhead, it was close enough to shake to ground, close enough to deafen me for a few seconds, but it was unable to hurt me, it hurt my dad instead.
